Arapiraca wrapper comes from a dark, hearty varietal grown around the city of Arapiraca in Brazil’s northeastern Alagoas state. Intense sun and sandy clay soils create a thick, oily leaf that ferments readily into rich brown or nearly black shades, delivering sweet-spice complexity without the heavy pepper found in some Nicaraguan leaves.

Cameroon wrapper comes from the Semillas de Cameroon varietal grown in West-Central Africa’s equatorial climate. Constant rainfall and loamy soil produce a thin, elastic leaf dotted with tiny bumps—called “tooth”—that hold aromatic oils. Its sweet-spice profile has made it a staple for mellower, complexity-driven blends since the 1970s.

Candela, also called Claro, more accurately Double Claro, is a cigar wrapper that retains its vivid green color thanks to a rapid, high-temperature “flash” cure. Farmers harvest the leaves slightly underripe, then raise barn temperatures. The quick heat seals chlorophyll in place before it degrades, creating a distinctive hue and fresh-cut-grass flavor.

A hardy, wide-leaf tobacco grown in open sunlight. Its thick veins and high oil content make it ideal for dark wrappers. Farmers allow the plants to grow taller and longer before harvest, then cure and ferment them at elevated temperatures to produce the signature dark brown-to-almost-black color.

Grown beneath sheets of diffusing cloth in the Connecticut River Valley. The shade tents soften direct sunlight, raising humidity and temperature slightly to produce a thinner, lighter colored leaf prized for its even burn and silky feel.

Corojo (pronounced “ko-RO-ho”) is a sun-grown Cuban-seed tobacco developed in the 1930s at the famed El Corojo farm in Pinar del Río. It earned a reputation for rich aroma and pronounced pepper spice, becoming Cuba’s standard wrapper until the 1990s, when blue-mold outbreaks forced growers to switch to hardier hybrids.

“Criollo” (cree-OH-yo) translates to “native,” reflecting its original status as Cuba’s go-to tobacco before newer hybrids like Corojo emerged. Today, Honduran and Nicaraguan farmers grow Criollo under open sun, producing a medium-thick, reddish-brown wrapper prized for its balance of gentle spice and natural sweetness.

“Habano” refers to Cuban-origin seed cultivated outside Cuba after the 1960s exodus of growers. When planted in Ecuador’s cloud-covered valleys or Nicaragua’s volcanic soil, the seed yields a dark, aromatic wrapper known for black-pepper zing and cocoa-cedar richness.

Maduro (Spanish for “ripe”) describes cigar wrapper leaves that undergo extended fermentation at higher temperatures—often 115 °F – 150 °F—for several weeks or months. The heat and time break down chlorophyll, darken the leaf, and concentrate natural sugars, yielding a supple, sweet-toned wrapper.

Oscuro refers to cigar wrappers that have reached the deepest possible shade—almost jet-black—through a combination of late harvest, high-priming selection, and prolonged high-temperature fermentation (often 130 °F +). The thick, oily leaves develop a shiny surface and bold, roasted flavors that stand up to strong filler blends.

San Andrés tobacco comes from Negro San Andrés — an indigenous varietal cultivated for centuries in the humid, mineral-rich basin near Mexico’s Gulf Coast. The leaf’s natural thickness and oil content make it highly adaptable: it can remain a lighter “natural” wrapper, serve as binder or filler, or undergo prolonged high-heat fermentation to become a dark, sweet Maduro wrapper.

Sumatra wrapper comes from an Indonesian seed grown in the humid lowlands of Sumatra. Its natural silkiness, gentle spice, and even combustion made it popular in the early 1900 s. In the 1990s, Ecuadorian farmers adopted the seed—using constant cloud cover as “natural shade”—producing a slightly darker, richer version called Ecuador Sumatra.
