Apostate Cigars was founded in 2020 by Brandon Oveson and Kendrick Woolstenhulme, two Utah natives who grew up as active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. The brand’s name is drawn directly from that background: in Mormon culture, an apostate is someone who openly breaks from the church’s teachings. Choosing to smoke cigars, tobacco being forbidden, is exactly that. It’s an unapologetic act of rebellion, and that spirit defines everything about how Apostate approaches the craft.

Last year, Apostate entered a distribution agreement with Oveja Negra Brands, and Death Mask is the first cigar from that partnership to roll out of Fábrica Oveja Negra in Estelí, Nicaragua. The factory is best known as the home of Black Label Trading Co. and is one of the most respected boutique rolling operations in the country. Under the same roof that produces some of the most visually arresting and technically demanding cigars in the market, Death Mask takes shape.

A 5½ x 48 Robusto wrapped in a dark, oily Mexican San Andrés Maduro leaf over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler. The San Andrés wrapper brings natural sweetness, dark earth, and a rich, satisfying depth to the blend, expect dark chocolate, espresso, leather, and a long, warming finish that builds from the first draw to the last.
